Stem Cell Therapy
At Yorba Regional Animal Hospital we are proud to offer some of the latest technologies available in veterinary medicine. Stem cell therapy is fairly new but has become widely used in veterinary medicine with a good rate of success. Dr. Kathleen Johnson and Dr. Robert Weis are credentialed to perform stem cell therapy. We encourage you to ask about this constantly evolving field of regenerative veterinary medicine.
What Is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy utilizes cells found in your pet's own fat tissue. Recent data has indicated much improvement in pain and function for pets with osteoarthritis as well as soft tissue orthopedic issues. Studies are currently being investigated using stem cell therapy for auto-immune disease, liver disease and renal disease.
What Are Stem Cells?
Stem cells, also known as regenerative cells, are your pet's own natural healing cells. Young cells are isolated and processed into a form that can easily be injected. These cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of tissue types, including tendon, ligament, bone, cartilage, smooth and cardiac muscle, liver and others. Stem cell therapy produces more normal and complete healing because it aides the body's natural healing process.
How Are Stem Cells Obtained?
Obtaining cells requires a short general anesthesia to extract a small amount of fat from the abdomen. The fat is then processed at our hospital in approximately 2-hours. After the initial surgery pets are mildly sedated for injection of the regenerative cells directly into the injured or arthritic area. Your pet should be able to go home the same day that his or her stem cell therapy is performed.
When Can I Expect To See Improvement?
Most clients notice positive changes from two weeks up to 30 days, although sometimes improvement is seen within days of their pet receiving treatment.
